The PMP application process: Detailed Information 1 comment

PMP Application Process

I have some questions about the Project Management Professional (PMP) application process. Where can I find detailed information about what I need to do?

PMP Application Process

PMI publishes, and regularly updates, a PMP handbook that describes in detail everything you need to do to conduct your PMP application process. The basic eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • 35 contact hours of formal education.
  • 4500 hours of project management experience over the past eight years, with a bachelor’s degree, or 7500 hours of project management experience over the past eight years, with a high school diploma, or equivalent.

You document your experience and training via PMI’s online application process. Once the eligibility requirements have been met, you will need to schedule, and pass, a 4-hour multiple-choice exam at a Pearson VUE testing center.

There are many ways to satisfy the 35 contact hour training requirement, but people often elect to take a PMP prep course. Many companies provide PMP prep courses, but they vary greatly in terms of content, quality, and duration.  You can read about one person’s experience prepping for the exam here.  If you’re interested in taking a course with Key Consulting, you can review our schedule and/or contact us with questions.
